Is the U.S. over-reported in the Japanese press?

This study focuses on factors accounting for international news in Japanese news papers. By testing the effects of several variables on the coverage from foreign countries in the Asahi, it is shown that the amount of coverage from foreign countries is largely explained by the importance of the country (GDP and population). An analysis of residuals shows that some countries (India, Taiwan, etc.) are consistently under-reported, whereas the United States, despite apparently large amounts of news, is not significantly more reported than predicted by the model.
