Right information about the rotor resistance of the induction motor (IM) is more important in indirect rotor flux-oriented vector control (IVC) algorithm during different temperature conditions. Because, this resistance value will be involved in rotor flux position calculations which will influence on performance of the drive. In this paper, a new configuration of reactive power-based model reference adaptive control (Q-MRAC) has been developed to estimate the rotor resistance more accurately for electrical vehicle (EV) applications. Moreover, in EVs, as the motor speed is increasing from the below base speed (constant torque mode) to above base speed (constant power mode), the value the magnetizing reactance of IM will change. In this work, the effect of this magnetic branch variation is also considered during the estimation. Therefore, the dynamics of the drive, will be improved in all speed ranges of EVs. The proposed Q-MRAC algorithm is tested in MATLAB/Simulink software platform and results are reported. These results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed estimation technique.
