The screened potential of an ion moving through a free-electron gas is calculated, and the resulting energy shift of bound electronic states of the ion is estimated. We find a decrease of the 2p-1s transition energy due to screening effects, and compare it with experi-mental results for high-velocity S projectiles in an AI target. 1.
