In this paper, we present the advance access mechanism for medium access control (MAC) with high throughput and strong supports for quality-of-service (QoS) and power control in mobile ad hoc networks and multihop wireless LANs. The advance access mechanism can solve the exposed terminal problem and the heterogeneous terminal problem and support interference awareness with single PHY channel for both control messages and data packets, without replying on busy tone. We demonstrate through simulations that the advance access mechanism is considerably stronger than IEEE 802.11e in terms of its differentiation capability for delays and throughput. The advance access mechanism can be easily incorporated into IEEE 802.11/11e and other existing/new MAC protocols to achieve the aforementioned advantages.
