The crystalline to amorphous transformation occurs at the Pt–Si interface in the formation of PtSi. The structure of the glassy phase depends on temperature. At higher temperatures, the glassy phase contains small randomly oriented Pt crystals. The lower temperature glass has as continuous amorphous structure. When Pt diffuses into Si, the crystalline-amorphous transformation occurs when the clastic energy of the crystalline solid is increased and the energy barrier for the reaction is lowered by the weakening of covalent bonds. PtSi nucleates within the glass at one interface. At 725 °C, the structure of the amorphous phase and the orientation of Pt and PtSi do not depend on the Si surface orientation.
