It is argued that cognitive‐scientific approaches to music have not, in general, addressed issues that differentiate music from other domains of human experience. A thought experiment is proposed, in which a computer generates music while another computer listens to it; the activities of the computers are, however, not observable because they are contained in the Chinese Music Box. From consideration of this experiment it is suggested that consensus and intention are integral elements in the human experience of music.
