A flat ice structure is formed by water molecules absorbed on the metal surfaces of Pt(111) (see picture). In contrast to conventional wisdom, the structure of water in the first layer is not buckled. Instead all water molecules bind directly to the metal surface (through PtO and PtHO interactions) and to each other through hydrogen bonds without dissociation.
