A new approach to magnetic component construction applicable to power electronic converters in the medium power range (500 W to 5 kW) is presented. The need for a separate assembly line for magnetic components is eliminated by their direct assembly onto printed circuit boards. Larger magnetic components are subdivided into smaller cells and interconnected, resulting in a low profile structure with a distribution in the total weight. The electrical characteristics, performance and manufacturability aspects are evaluated and compared to conventional magnetic components.>
