ABSTRACT This study aims to improve the impact damage resistance of multilayered 3D hybrid woven composites. The novelty of the research lies in the development of multilayered 3D hybrid woven preforms with reduced crimp by varying Z‐yarn interlacing densities. The impact damage response of multilayered 3D woven composites was evaluated and compared with that of 2D woven composites using the ultrasonic C‐Scan. The multilayered 3D woven composites with lower Z‐yarn interlacing density demonstrated superior impact resistance compared to their 2D counterparts. In these composites, an increase in Z‐yarn interlacing density resulted in reduced impact resistance due to the higher crimp ratio. Additionally, the interlacing mechanism played a crucial role in restricting damage propagation within the structure, thereby enhancing the structural integrity of the multilayered 3D woven composites.
