Foundations make up a small but important segment of the nonprofit sector. Previous research has explored their contributions to social change and their relationships to grassroots organizations. The present research is concerned with how the foundations that fund such organizations contribute to the discourse of philanthropy. Using a discourse analysis to examine foundation documents and study text in context, this research finds that foundations are not ideologically invested in supporting the sociopolitical order, as critics claim, but are interested in preserving and promoting philanthropy's role in society, a finding with important ramifications for practice.
