The theory of dynamic light scattering (DLS) by non‐ergodic media, systems such as polymeric gels whose density fluctuations are partially “frozen”, is discussed. We derive the relationship between the time‐averaged time correlation function of the scattered intensity, the quantity measured in a single DLS experiment, and the ensemble‐averaged correlation function of the sample's density fluctuations. The connection between DLS, speckle and the reciprocal‐space structure of the medium is also discussed.
