The effectiveness of group modification of empathic and self-disclosure verbalization and the interpersonal consequences of these interventions were assessed among American female college students. The results indicated that group modification was effective and that empathy training had more desirable interpersonal effects than training in self-disclosure or a control condition. The study also demonstrated a new method of analyzing person-perception data that avoids the confounding of components of accuracy scores that has occurred in prior research.
