An iterative optimization technique based on the method of successive projections is proposed for the design of the two-dimensional (2-D) linear phase FIR digital filters. The technique is simple, fast, and compares favorably with the presently available design techniques. To illustrate the method several filters with masks up to <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">25 × 25</tex> have been designed. The technique can also be used to design 1-D linear phase FIR filters.
