There is a need to test the widely accepted assumption that the child's attitudes are acquired directly from his parents. Previous research may have exaggerated the extent to which attitudes are transmitted in the family. Using a sample of 466 parent-child pairs, it was discovered that there was a low association between family members' mobility orientations. Various conditions within the family had a noticeable affect on the level of parent-child agreement. Interpretation of the results suggests general conditions that may affect the success of parental socialization.
