Since its discovery in 1965, the cosmic microwave background (CMB) has been measured at higher and higher resolution. In this Perspective, Pierpaoli et al . combine all existing observational data sets to derive the characteristic temperature variations in the CMB as a function of angular scale. The results have profound implications for the origin of structure in the universe and the global curvature of space.
