Examines risk preferences in rural Cambodia, revealing key sociodemographic influences on economic decisions.
This study examined the association between sociodemographic characteristics and risk preferences using data from a risk game experiment based on prospect theory in rural Cambodia. Risk preferences influence people’s decisions on agricultural investment, insurance purchase, and other economic choices; thus, the determinants of risk preference are especially worth investigating to understand the economic activities of the rural poor. The estimation results showed a distinctive feature regarding the determinants of risk preferences in rural Cambodia. A positive relationship between land assets and risk aversion and between education and probability weighting are the most interesting.
