Communication reviews evidence of whole-cortex mechanisms affecting attention and consciousness, suggesting new diagnostic and treatment approaches.
There is considerable controversy regarding the network systems underlying attention and consciousness. This communication reviews evidence suggesting that whole cortex mechanisms may complement network and regional effects on these functions. These diffuse changes could be assessed with waveform analysis, as used in statistical physics. Doing this might clarify the nature of mechanisms underlying attention, consciousness, and other natural phenomena, and lead to new approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
