This paper reports the changes and challenges Chinese students face in study‐abroad (SA) situations. The data were collected through interviews and observations over a three‐month period. Informed by sociocultural theory which views learners' use of the language both as a tool for mediating learning and as an object to be acquired, the analysis presented reveals how SA students face the challenges from a language learner to language user. It is found that they try to adapt their language system to the new environment through language use, translation, and conceptual development. But they also face great challenges in using the language and experience academic culture shock. Based on the findings, implications and suggestions are proposed, which are applicable not only to Chinese students but beyond.
