In 1903, Metchnikoff and Roux first demonstrated the experimental production of the disease by animal inoculation; two years later Schaudinn and Hoffmann announced the discovery of theSpirochœta pallida, since conceded to be the etiologic agent of the disease; and in 1906 Wassermann, Neisser and Bruck published the method of serum diagnosis with which we associate their names. Schaudinn and Hoffmann gave excellent descriptions of the morphology of theSpirochœta pallidaand detailed methods of demonstrating the organism in the secretions and in the tissues of syphilitic lesions.
