In Democracy in America, Tocqueville's section entitled “The Present State and the Probable Future of the Indian Tribes Inhabiting the Territory of the Union,” comes in the Final chapter of the volumes published in 1X35 and seems almost an afterthought. In fact, François Furet is sure Tocqueville had to "discard his analytical system" in order to write about Native North Americans (182).
