The specific aim of this research project was to obtain a broad and detailed view of the aged person's perception and interpretation of his or her state of wellness, as well as the variables responsible for the present state of wellness. Four to six interviews with each subject provided data concerning ideas and perceptions of the subject's healthy aging. Domains of wellness included activities and relationships. Major themes that appear to have an impact on wellness for these subjects include resiliency, meta-aging, and vital involvement. Implications for nursing and health care of the elderly include fostering a continued interest in life after retirement, encouraging continued learning opportunities, and promoting interest in community, national, and international affairs, as well as in wellness activities.
