Design study demonstrates higher torque and lower torque ripple in outer-rotor motors, suggesting improved applications in traction control.
This paper presents a design study on an outer-rotor wound-field flux-switching motor (OR-WFFSM) with segmental rotors for higher torque and lower torque ripple. A 24s/14p OR-WFFSM is optimized and investigated using finite element analysis. The optimized 24s/14p OR-WFFSM exhibits higher torque and lower torque ripple than the conventional 24s/16p OR-WFFSM. Moreover, the 24s/14p OR-WFFSM exhibits higher torque compared to the reported axial-flux switched reluctance motor for applications in traction control via in-wheel motors.
