Abstract

New York City intended to redevelop slum so-called ‘Gas House district’ in Manhattan in the 1930s. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company participated in the project. When the Company presented the project’s plan named ‘Stuyvesant Town,’ Marcel Breuer proposed his own plan for the project to present some standard on the living conditions for the large housing projects after World War II. Then, the affirmation of large-scale urban redevelopment promoted environmental improvements in large cities. And it is suggested that this proposal provided some ideas for large urban developments after World War II like ‘Toulouse le Mirail' etc.
