Abstract

This study examines the relationship between living environments, seasonal excess mortality, and healthcare costs among late-stage elderly adults in Japan. Using cluster analysis across secondary medical areas, we found that insulation retrofits were associated with reduced winter mortality. Notably, in cold regions, wooden housing was linked to lower summer risk for all-cause mortality but increased risk for residential mortality, indicating the impact of inadequate indoor thermal control. Larger floor areas correlated with lower healthcare costs. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions, such as insulation and air conditioning, to reduce seasonal health risks.
