Key Points

  • To investigate the magnetic structure and crystalline electric field excitations of YbCuS2.
  • Conducted powder neutron diffraction experiments using a high-resolution TOF diffractometer WISH.
  • Performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments with a TOF spectrometer MARI.
  • Focused on a semiconductor compound with 4f13 electronic configuration.
  • Identified the magnetic structure of YbCuS2.
  • Characterized crystalline electric field excitations through neutron scattering techniques.

Abstract

I visited the ISIS facility at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK, to conduct powder neutron diffraction experiments with a high-resolution long-wavelength time-of-flight (TOF) diffractometer WISH and inelastic neutron scattering experiments with a TOF spectrometer MARI on an ytterbium-based semiconductor, YbCuS2, with 4f13 configuration. My stay aimed to investigate the magnetic structure and crystalline electric field excitations of this Yb-zigzag chain compound. In this report, I record my experimental stay and a summary of the results obtained by these measurements.
