Purpose Schizophrenia (SCZ) at work is a grossly under-researched topic in business and management. This study focuses on how SCZ individuals may feel efficacious and exercise human agency to cope with the challenging and stressful health conditions during workplace integration. Design/methodology/approach The study employed a qualitative research design, drawing insights from seven in-depth cases of SCZ individuals. Data included interviews with SCZ individuals, their family members or custodians, mental health professional (psychiatrists/psychologists) and employers. Specifically, the data dataset comprised seven SCZ individuals, three family members/custodians, five psychiatrists/psychologists and two employers, facilitating a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the phenomenon under investigation. Findings Informed by salutogenic perspective, this study offers a framework for facilitating successful employment outcomes for SZC individuals. It depicts the process of how the human agency of SCZ could be enabled in the presence of adequate resources for the successful integration of SCZ individuals at work. Originality/value This study contributes to diversity and mental health literatures by integrating Antonovsky's salutogenic model with self-efficacy to guide how SCZ individuals may gain relative control over their lives and become a productive part of the employed workforce.
