East African writers of South Asian origin handled issues of identity and history within the context of the homogenising nationalist politics of the nation-state. While this engagement led to the privileging of diaspora politics over the assimilationist ideologies engendered by the nation-state, these writers remain sceptical about the emancipatory potential of such politics for the marginalized East African Asian migrants in the West.
