This article describes the early history, dosimetry, and irradiators used in the irradiation of protozoa. It also discusses mode of action of ionizing radiations on protozoa and their effects on dividing cells, the life cycle, induction of mutations and monsters, and species differences as a result of the irradiation. Presented are investigations on protozoa revealing how certain chemical agents used in conjunction with ionizing radiations may have a direct bearing upon cancer therapy. In addition, important unsolved problems for future research are discussed.
