The magnetic pickup of the outer rail of a Winchester-style monolithic ferrite recording head has been measured with and without trailing edge modification. Two models have been developed to understand the effectiveness of corner blending techniques. One approach was a three-dimensional numerical computation using a reduced scalar potential finite element method. The second method was an approximate two-dimensional analytic calculation based on conformal mapping.
