Taste acuity and zinc and copper metabolism were studied in 19 patients with thermal burns. Eighty-four percent exhibited hypogeusia (decreased taste acuity). Mean serum total zinc concentration was decreased and mean urinary zinc excretion was increased in the patients with hypogeusia compared to controls. An association among hypogeusia, anorexia, and altered zinc metabolism after thermal injury is strongly suggested.
