The authors present a physically based approach, using polarization, to distinguish three types of image edges; limb edges, specular edges, and albedo/physical edges. Assuming general imaging conditions and smooth dielectric surfaces, a labeling scheme which enables one to distinguish among these edge types has been developed. The method is demonstrated on laboratory images.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
