Rigid bronchoscopy with debulking successfully restored airway patency in a 38-year-old female with acute airway obstruction caused by a rare tracheal malignant melanoma.
Why the study?
Tracheal malignant melanomas are extremely rare and aggressive with limited life expectancy, and there is no optimal treatment method.
Case Report (n=1)

Rigid bronchoscopy with debulking can safely provide airway patency in patients with acute airway obstruction due to rare tracheal malignant melanoma, though overall prognosis remains poor.

May temporize acute obstruction from rare tracheal melanoma; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.
Tracheal tumors are quite rare, with an incidence of 2.6 per 1,000,000 persons. Tracheal malignant melanomas are one of the least common types among these tumors due to the lack of natural epithelial tissue of melanocytes. There is no optimal treatment method for tracheal malign melanomas because they have an aggressive nature, have limited life expectancy and occur very rarely. This paper discusses the case of and treatment methods fora patient who was initially suspected to have a foreign body aspiration because of presenting to hospital with acute airway obstruction.

Demir et al. (2022) conducted a case report in Tracheal malignant melanoma (n=1). Rigid bronchoscopy with debulking was evaluated. Rigid bronchoscopy with debulking successfully restored airway patency in a 38-year-old female with acute airway obstruction caused by a rare tracheal malignant melanoma.
