Convergence tests of coupling operators

In the coupling operator formalism developed by Huzinaga, Hirao, and Nakatsuji the conditions for optimum orbitals are coupled via arbitrary constants {λij}. We show that these constants can be optimized to improve SCF convergence. An improved coupling operator scheme is proposed and tested on several open-shell states of selected atomic and molecular systems.
