Electron energy loss spectra were taken with 50 keV electrons on GeS single crystals for 0 < E < 40 eV and with different orientations of transferred momentum. No anisotropy of the energy loss functions Im (–1/ϵ ii ) ( i = x, y, z ) could be observed indicating ϵ xx ≈ ϵ yy ≈ ϵ zz for E 3 eV. ϵ xx is calculated from Im (–1/ϵ xx ) by Kramers‐Kronig analysis. Our results indicate that the dielectric function of GeS is, to a good approximation, isotropic for E > 3 eV despite the layer type structure of the compound.
