The Black Sea ecosystem suffered catastrophically during the 1980s and early 1990s from the effects of eutrophication and the arrival of an invasive species, the ctenophore Mnemiopsis. However, this ecosystem is now on the road to recovery due to a decline in nutrient input from rivers such as the Danube that feed into the Black Sea, and the arrival of another ctenophore Beroe, a natural predator of Mnemiopsis.
