If Ξ is an irreducible representation of a group π’, and β is a subgroup of π’, then Ξ furnishes a representation of β which is, in general, reducible, and the branching rules specify which irreducible representations of β occur in the decomposition of this representation. Branching rules are derived for various choices of π’ and β, including most possibilities that have been discussed as higher symmetry groups.
