Creative industries are at the core of the twenty-first century's economy. Most developed countries recognise the importance of creative industries and have studied those industries to strategise their national development. This paper shows the effect of creative industries on urban economy through a case study of Miami metropolitan areas. This study uses a panel analysis to measure the relation between creative industries and urban economy. The study suggests the following implications: first, creative industries are mostly clustered in the Miami city, not clustered at the metropolitan level. Miami's industries, workers and sales in the creative sector are almost the same as the sum from the second ranked city to the sixth ranked city. The value of global Moran's I is −0.06, meaning that creative industries show a dispersed pattern at the metropolitan level. Second, the number of creative industries and the diversity of those industries in the Miami metropolitan statistical area have a positive effect on urban economy, whereas the specialisation of creative industries is negative. The governments need to develop strategies for utilising creative industries to lead economic growth and encourage the diversity of creative industries rather than specialisation of creative industries for urban planning to grow urban economy.
