Telemdcine is the practice of healthcare delivery at a distance through the use of telecommunications. The component services and basic principles of telemedicine range from text reports, voice conversation, and facsimile to waveforms, diagnostic imaging, and interactive videoconferencing. Communications issues are surveyed from the perspective of both LAN and WAN environments. Pilot projects of the 1960’s through 1980’s have provided insight into functional requirements. The authors review equipment and network considerations, and survey current telemedicine projects in the United States of America.
