Needle phobia-induced anxiety precipitated takotsubo cardiomyopathy in a 55-year-old female prior to peripheral venous cannulation for elective knee arthroscopy.
Case Report (n=1)
Needle phobia-induced anxiety is a rare but significant trigger that can precipitate takotsubo cardiomyopathy in the peri-operative period.
Summary A 55‐year‐old female scheduled for elective knee arthroscopy became significantly dyspnoeic in the anaesthetic room prior to peripheral venous cannulation. The subsequent clinical course and later investigations led to a diagnosis of takotsubo cardiomyopathy precipitated by needle phobia‐induced anxiety. This example highlights a rare but significant manifestation of needle phobia and prompts a discussion about the optimal techniques available to ameliorate the response in the peri‐operative period.
