In order to evaluate the clinical aspect of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS), 107 operated cases of IHPS have been analyzed every 2 years since 1977. The duration from the onset of the disease to the operation and that of hospital stay tend to shorten year by year, that might be brought by an appropriate infusion therapy and rapid increase in volume of postoperative oral ingestion. Metabolic alkalosis with hypochloremia and hypokalemia and anemia which are the typical biochemical abnormalities in IHPS, have been getting milder recently. The spread of the notion about IHPS and sonographic diagnosis over pediatricians as well as pediatric surgeons have facilitated the early diagnosis. This disease is primarily to be treated in the field of pediatric surgery, but infants complaining of vomitting often consult a pediatricians, when the presence of IHPS should be entertained as a probable differential diagnosis for vomiting. If any tumor is hardly palpated in an infant suspected to IHPS from his or her previous history, sonography is a useful modality to make the early diagnosis of the disease.
