This paper explores the idea of social work research as a moral activity, closely connected with the moral purposes of the wider social work enterprise. It considers the particular 'cognitive orientation' of much contemporary social work research and the regulatory and managerial context in which it currently operates. It encourages social work researchers to protect their contribution to social work as a contentious, unbiddable and emancipatory project.
