This book is a result of a joint effort of the Northern Committee for Alcohol Research of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The committee members are drawn from the biological and social sciences, as well as administrative positions. The purpose of the study has been limited to "a description of how youngsters drink, and how differences in the consumption of alcohol in the four Northern countries appear against dissimilarities in the legal restrictions and against the background of the shaping of legal control." (p 15) The method consisted of a sociological field study. Between February 27 and April 15, 1960, about 1,200 boys were interviewed in the capital cities of each of the four countries.
