Summary The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Assertive Discipline (AD) training. A particular focus was to determine whether AD trained teachers show more positive verbal recognition in response to both social and academic behaviour than teachers who have not had AD training. Teachers’ perception of a change in their ability to manage pupil behaviour after AD training was also measured. Results showed that AD trained teachers use more positive recognition than non‐AD trained teachers and use proportionally more positive than negative comments. Overall, AD trained teachers perceive an increase in their ability to manage pupil behaviour. The biggest perceived increase was in their ability to keep pupils on task.
