Interest in research synthesis as a primary research endeavour is increasing in many areas of the social sciences. However, it has not been widely employed in the field of sport management. This review paper outlines the uses of research synthesis and discusses three approaches that might be particularly appropriate to sport management researchers: systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-interpretation. A brief overview of each of these approaches is given prior to the discussion of a range of examples and applications from previous sport management research. The utility of research synthesis in making sense of diverse research areas is highlighted along with its potential to ensure full use is made of existing research findings. In conclusion, the need for research synthesis to be synergistic is discussed.
