This case report highlights sudden death in an apparently healthy athlete associated with mitral valve prolapse.
May link mitral valve prolapse to sudden athletic death; hypothesis-generating case report leaves risk stratification open.
An apparently healthy six-foot, two-inch, 220-pound football player at the University of South Carolina collapsed and died prior to practice in the training room at Williams-Brice Stadium. There was no previous history of cardiovascular or other major medical abnormality. A discussion of the final autopsy diagnoses, the click-murmur syndrome or mitral valve prolapse, and its apparent association with this case will be discussed.
