A recent study conducted at the Douglas Hospital Research Centre in Montreal by Mercier et al. (1990) investigated the contribution of services to the quality of life in the community of 152 former psychiatric patients. Results indicated that those persons who participated in rehabilitation services (occupational therapy programs of a rehabilitation centre, community based workshops, day care and day hospital centres offering occupational therapy programs) were less satisfied with their quality of life. In order to explain these paradoxical results, this paper will focus on the relationship between the use of rehabilitation services and quality of life and will bring forward some of the objective and subjective factors that need to be considered in planning intervention.
