There is no topic more urgently in need of the distinction between observation and theory than recent cosmology. Professor McVittie has made striking contributions to the devising and assessing of theories, but in this book he applies also a shrewd judgment in making clear to the general scientific reader the observed facts upon which all theoretical work must depend.
