The polarizabilities αd, αq and the shielding factor γ∞ for free ions have been correlated to their radius of maximum electron density ρm through a relation of the form α, γ = Kρmp. Values of the parameters K and p have been obtained for two- and four-electron ions. The use of this relation for obtaining correct values for ions in solids has been discussed. Consideration of the Li+ ion in a LiF crystal shows notable deviation from free-ion values.
