ciety. The core nursing library was developed in cooperation with the New England Regional Medical Library Services (NERMLS) at the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine in response to specific requests for guidance in dealing with library problems. The basic concept is that all major areas of nursing practice, including the basic sciences, be covered in the book collection; that book selections be current and authoritative; that a minimal number of high quality journals appropriate to practice be included; and that all material be readily accessible, clearly labeled, and logically arranged for use by nurses. Such a library is especially useful where funds and library facilities are limited. The nursing core library is patterned after a core library for physicians prepared by PMI and NERMLS which provides basic materials needed by medical practitioners (1).
