This article investigates the influence of Chen Hongshou's methods on Chinese art, revealing his innovative legacy.
The article explores the phenomenon of the creative legacy of the outstanding Chinese artist Chen Hongshou (1598–1652) and its impact on the development of Chinese art. The aim of the study is to identify the nature of the master's artistic method's influence on the subsequent development of Chinese painting and engraving, as well as to determine the main innovative elements of his work and their role in shaping new artistic trends. Specifically, the artist's innovative techniques, such as the "floating thread" technique, the variability of linear structure depending on the type of character being depicted, the diversity of approaches to organizing pictorial space, and the artist's ability to create balanced compositions are examined. The artist's work is compared with individual works by members of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou" group: "Fisherman" by Huang Shen and "Rooster" by Li Shan. The study is based on historical and comparative analysis, iconographic analysis of works, stylistic and compositional analysis of artistic techniques, and the method of art criticism. The study is based on the works of domestic and foreign experts on the history of Chinese art. The study found that Chen Hongshou's artistic legacy is a unique synthesis of traditional techniques and innovative solutions. The master created his own system of artistic techniques, which had a revolutionary impact on the development of Chinese painting and engraving. His innovations included the development of an original line technique, the creation of multi-layered compositions, and the development of an expressive style for depicting characters. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the comprehensive analysis of the influence of Chen Hongshou's artistic method on the subsequent development of Chinese art. An attempt has been made to study the mechanisms of transformation of his creative techniques in the works of subsequent masters. The practical significance of the work is determined by the possibility of using the results obtained in scientific research, in the development of training courses on the history of Chinese painting, in museum practice and restoration activities. The study has shown that Chen Hongshou's creative legacy has had a significant impact on the development of Chinese art, setting new standards in the field of figurative painting and engraving. His innovative techniques in working with space and form have determined the vector of development of Chinese art for many years to come, contributing to the formation of new art schools and trends. In addition, Chen Hongshou's work contributed to the emergence of a new artistic style in Japan - ukiyo-e.
